Microsoft Patents In-Game Advertising System for Xbox and PC

Microsoft has patented a technology that allows for in-game advertisements on Xbox and PC during specific downtime moments, aiming to minimize disruption. The system utilizes 'trigger events' to display ads and features an 'ad credit' system to manage ad-free gameplay periods.
Microsoft’s Advertising Patent
Microsoft has filed a patent for an innovative advertising system designed for PC and Xbox games. This system will enable the display of advertisements during gameplay, specifically during non-disruptive moments, such as loading screens and end-of-round transitions.
The patent, published on September 3rd in the US, describes a "context aware" approach that identifies what it terms "trigger events" in games to show ads. When an advertisement is triggered, the game temporarily suspends, similar to practices seen in many free-to-play mobile games. This method seeks to ensure that gameplay remains uninterrupted while still incorporating advertising.
Additionally, the system includes an "ad credit" feature that allocates players specific periods of ad-free gameplay. Once these periods expire, the game will display ads based on the recognized downtime.
While the applications of this technology are not fully outlined, Microsoft has previously expressed interest in exploring various avenues for delivering software, services, and gaming experiences. Furthermore, the company is testing an ad-based tier for Xbox cloud gaming and is rumored to be considering a cheaper, ad-supported option for Xbox Game Pass, although it has not confirmed any specific plans regarding this.
