Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios and owned by Microsoft since 2014, has reached a remarkable milestone of over 425 million copies sold worldwide. Asha Sharma, Xbox's CEO, shared this update during the Minecraft LIVE event held on September 27. Since its initial public testing over 17 years ago, the game remains a beloved staple in the open-world survival genre.

Sales Growth Over the Years

The game's sales trajectory has been impressive, surpassing 100 million copies in 2016 and 176 million in 2019. The latest figures indicate that Minecraft has increased its sales by 75 million copies in just a year and a half, reflecting its ongoing popularity. In 2023, it was reported that sales had crossed 300 million, and by April 2025, it reached 350 million.

Daily Player Engagement

Sharma noted that Minecraft continues to attract an average of over 300,000 new players each day. While this figure includes both purchases and players accessing the game through subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, it highlights the game’s ability to engage new audiences even after many years since its official release in 2011.

Evolving Content Updates

In response to player demand, Mojang has shifted its content strategy, planning to release smaller, more frequent updates starting in 2024. This new approach, termed "Game Drop," will allow for ongoing engagement with the community throughout the year. During the recent livestream, details were shared about upcoming content, including the fourth Game Drop scheduled for winter 2026, which will introduce new features such as the "Ice Cavern" ecosystem and the new dimension "The Sift" in 2027.
