Capcom is planning to enhance its RE Engine into an 'AI game engine' as part of its REX initiative, which focuses on improving development efficiency for future games. The company aims for a collaborative future where AI assists in programming and testing without replacing human creativity.
Capcom's Vision for AI Integration
At the recent Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, the company announced its ambition to evolve the RE Engine into an AI-driven game engine. This initiative, known as REX, aims to address the challenges currently faced in the development of triple-A games by enhancing performance and efficiency.
Programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined that the REX project will employ more accessible programming languages, enabling AI systems to generate code and conduct automated testing. This development is intended to streamline the game creation process and reduce the time required for testing and debugging.
In addition to these advancements, Capcom plans to release some of its technologies online to assist with AI training efforts. Ishida expressed a vision of a future where game development is a collaborative effort between humans and AI, stating, "create games together with AI."
However, Capcom's Vice President of Game Development Platform and AI Solutions, Shinichi Inoue, clarified that the company’s use of AI is not aimed at generating artistic content. Instead, it focuses on enhancing human creativity and facilitating communication among team members. Inoue emphasized the importance of contextual understanding in game development, aiming to recreate an environment where ideas can be freely discussed and refined by the development team.
This shift in Capcom’s approach aligns with broader trends in the gaming industry, as highlighted by Google Cloud’s Jack Buser, who noted that many popular games have already incorporated AI technologies in their development processes.
