Capcom Releases Open Source RE:Dox for Next-Gen Game Development
Written with artificial intelligence.

Capcom has launched its latest data display and serialization library, RE:Dox, as open-source software to enhance its next-generation game engine project, REX. This initiative aims to improve data processing efficiency through AI and machine learning integration.
Introduction to RE:Dox
Capcom has announced the release of RE:Dox, a new data display and serialization library, as open-source software (OSS). This library serves as a foundational technology for Capcom's next-generation game engine, REX (RE neXt ENGINE). By making RE:Dox available for external developers, Capcom is also signaling its commitment to gradually enhancing the RE ENGINE with AI and machine learning capabilities.
Background on the RE ENGINE
The RE ENGINE has been in use since its debut in Resident Evil 7, with subsequent support for games such as Monster Hunter: World, Resident Evil Village, and more. In October 2023, Capcom publicly unveiled the REX engine project, aimed at addressing issues that have emerged from the long-term use of the RE ENGINE and facilitating its evolution into the next generation. The recent CAPCOM Open Conference RE:2026 in Tokyo highlighted this vision and introduced RE:Dox as a key component.
Features and Performance
RE:Dox is designed for .NET and utilizes a token-based structured data engine, streamlining the conversion of various data into a unified format. This enhancement accelerates data processing, editing, and retrieval. According to benchmarks provided by Capcom, RE:Dox can theoretically achieve processing speeds up to approximately 2.84 times faster than the standard System.Text.Json during parallel processing of JSON deserialization. However, actual performance may vary based on data structure, execution environment, and CPU conditions.
Integration with AI and Future Developments
In addition to RE:Dox, Capcom is developing other technologies as part of the REX project, including RE:UI for optimizing development tools and RE:Runtime for improving animation processing. Notably, RE:Flows aims to simplify the implementation of game mechanics, making it easier for developers to translate gameplay concepts into standardized programming languages. While Capcom is exploring AI to enhance efficiency, they have clarified that AI-generated content will not be directly incorporated into games.
Upcoming Events
The next technical demonstration of RE:Dox will take place on October 17 and 18, 2023, at the HERBIS OSAKA banquet hall in Osaka, primarily targeting students from vocational schools and universities. This event will continue to showcase Capcom's advancements in game development technology, reinforcing their dedication to improving the developer experience and efficiency in game production.
