Shigeru Miyamoto to Receive Japan's Cultural Order

Legendary Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto will be honored with Japan's highest cultural accolade, the Order of Culture, next month. At 73, he becomes the first video game developer to receive this prestigious award.

Shigeru Miyamoto's Historic Honor

Shigeru Miyamoto, the renowned designer behind iconic Nintendo franchises, will be awarded the Order of Culture by the Emperor of Japan next month. This honor recognizes his significant contributions to cultural development, making him the first game developer to receive this award.

In a statement made on October 23, Miyamoto expressed both humility and pride: "I feel incredibly embarrassed but truly honored to be chosen for such a prestigious award. As I always say, I don't create games alone. This award is the result of teamwork with many people, so I will accept it on their behalf."

Miyamoto, who has been with Nintendo since 1977 and is currently a Representative Director, has played a crucial role in the company's evolution into a major player in the video game industry. He is best known for creating the Mario series, with the character's first appearance in Donkey Kong in 1981, and for his work on The Legend of Zelda and Star Fox.

Reflecting on his 50 years in the industry, Miyamoto remarked, "I feel that my long journey in video games, a medium that was still very undefined when I started, is why I am being honored in this way. I believe I have had incredible luck in life."

The Order of Culture is awarded to individuals who have made notable contributions across various fields, including science, literature, and the arts. Other prominent past recipients include filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and fashion designer Issey Miyake. The award ceremony will take place on November 3, coinciding with Japan's national Culture Day.
